In order to create a link to an item for sale at Amazon such as a book or DVD, you have to know the item's "ASIN" number. For books, the ASIN number is identical to the book's ISBN number. If you don't have a copy of the book in your physical possession, you can usually get the ISBN number by searching for the book on Amazon. If that doesn't work, the Library of Congress should have it.
For items other than books, you'll need to search for the item on Amazon. Click on the link to the item. Somewhere near the top of the screen--you'll probably have to scroll down to find it--there will be a section entitled, "Product Details." In that section, you should be able to find a line that reads, "ASIN:". You'll want to copy the string of letters and numbers that follows onto your clipboard.
General form of Amazon links:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/%%ASIN%%/internetinfidels/
where %%ASIN%% should be replaced with the item's actual ASIN.
Here are some examples:
Example #1 (a book): Suppose you want to add a link to Julian Baggini's book, Atheism: A Very Short Introduction. The ISBN for this book is 0192804243. Therefore the URL you should use for links to the book at Amazon would look as follows:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0192804243/internetinfidels/
Example #2 (a DVD): Now let's say you want to link to the boxed set edition of Carl Sagan's Cosmos on DVD. The ASIN for this set is B000055ZOB. Therefore the URL you should use for links to the DVD at Amazon would look as follows:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000055ZOB/internetinfidels/
NOTE: It is important that the string "internetinfidels" be included at the end of the URL or else I.I. will not receive a commission for the sale of the book.
