Paulson earned a bachelor's degree in Journalism, a Master's degree in Public Administration, and a Master's degree in Management of Information Systems. He was an active member of the Humanist Association for more than thirty years and a plaintiff in a federal court suit against the City of San Diego to challenge the constitutionality of a latin cross placed on Mount Soledad Public Park. He died in October, 2006.
