History has shown that whenever a church becomes involved with a state, the state simultaneously exercises some control over the church. Many governments have been founded as outright theocracies, and those have always shown themselves to be some of the most repugnant and repressive regimes in the whole history of humanity.
Consequently, the founders of our pluralistic and secular republic made it exquisitely clear that religion was to play no part in the governing of their new nation, nor was the government to involve itself in religious affairs. No religion or sect is mentioned in any of the founding documents, and this wise decision has helped to promote one of the most successful and enduring of democracies.
With this in mind, the purpose of this Coalition is to keep religion
out of government and government out of religion. When there are
challenges to that separation of church and state, when tax dollars and
church dollars begin to commingle, we will raise our collective voices
and sound the alarm. Through our own efforts, and through the efforts
of other like-minded individuals and organizations, we intend to
preserve that invaluable linchpin of our own liberty - the strict
separation of Church and State.
