Evolution 4: Kids' Page 6

mosquitos

Some creationists will try to say that evolution that causes small changes within species, called microevolution, but that evolution that creates new species, called macroevolution, doesn't happen. However, not only does it happen, but one example of macroevolution has occured within the past 100 years to mosquitos living in the British underground subway system.

After the subway was built, mosquitos who ate bird's blood had to try to live on the blood of other animals, since there are no birds underground. They either were able to survive on the new blood, or they died. The ones that did not die were able to pass on the genes that helped them survive. That is how natural selection works.

Now, the mosquitoes in the British underground are a new species that eats human blood instead of bird blood. Scientists know it is a new species, because this new species of mosquito can not have mosquito babies with the bird blood-eating species. This was in the news, at BBC News, sometime in 1998. Well, that's a few basics. For updates on new discoveries concerning evolution, go to Evolution 5: Kids' Page 7 . Thanks for visiting. If you read other stuff about evolution I'm sure you could find out tons more information than I have here. If you think I left out something really important and think I should add a page about it, or if you have some comment good or bad about this page or this site in general use the link below to go back to the home page, and please sign the guestbook from there.
