Hi, kids! I'm godlessheathen (also known as Lynne), as you may have found out from my homepage. You may be wondering why I call myself godlessheathen. It's two words in case you didn't know --godless, which means I don't believe in or worship any gods, and heathen which means I'm not a Christian, Jew, nor Moslem. So what am I? I'm an atheist, which means the same thing as godless. I'm also a naturalist, which means I don't believe in anything else supernatural either (no ghosts, devils, spirits, nor angels), because I don't have faith. Faith is comforting to some people, but not to me because I don't think it's a good way to find out about life, the universe, and stuff. You may disagree, and that's okay. People all around the world believe different things and it's good to find out about different beliefs or ways of thought. Some people think that everybody should have the same religion (theirs) and that has led to wars and other ways of hurting people.

I think a good way to find out about life, the universe and stuff is through science. What is science? It's a combination of methods to find out stuff about life and the universe. (I'll get more specific about this as we go along.) This doesn't mean you can't make use of both faith and science; lots of people look to science to answer questions about the natural world, and to faith to answer questions about the supernatural world. (Naturalists, and some atheists, don't believe in a supernatural world, though). A few people look to faith to answer nearly all questions, and either ignore or hate science. However this can lead to beliefs in really weird things such as the notion that dinosaurs and people existed at the same time (they didn't), that the earth is only 10 thousand years old (more like 4 1/2 billion!), and that deadly illness can be cured by praying (people who try that often die from those illnesses when medicine could have saved them).

Science itself, however doesn't use faith. You may hear about something called "the scientific method" but actually lots of methods are used. The first step is usually observation. The scientist watches how things work, and then records what happens. Then (s)he may develope an hypothesis - which is sort of a "first draft" of an explanation. It's a first draft because the scientist can not assume it to be true without testing it first. If it can't be tested, it isn't science. You can't call something science if it's based only on what you've been told or on what you want to believe. Science must be based on evidence, not faith.
